What Is a Heavy-Duty AGV and Where Is It Used?

A heavy-duty AGV is an automated material handling vehicle designed to transport large and heavy loads without requiring continuous manual driving.

Compared with conventional warehouse AGVs, heavy-duty AGVs usually feature reinforced frames, higher load capacities and industrial drive systems suitable for machinery, molds, steel structures and oversized components.

Depending on the application, navigation technologies can include laser navigation and other positioning solutions.

The AGV can also be equipped with additional functions such as:

  • Hydraulic lifting
  • Automatic docking
  • Laser obstacle detection
  • Emergency stop protection
  • Wireless communication
  • Multi-vehicle coordination
  • Customized loading platforms

Heavy-duty AGVs are increasingly used in industries where traditional forklifts are inefficient or where heavy components must move repeatedly between production stations.

Typical applications include equipment manufacturing, metalworking, automotive production, mold transportation and large-component assembly.

Unlike standard transfer carts, an AGV can become part of an automated production system, allowing material transportation to be coordinated with production processes.

For heavy-load AGV projects, the vehicle should be customized according to payload, load center, route, floor condition, positioning accuracy and docking requirements.
