How Laser Obstacle Avoidance Improves AGV Safety

Heavy-duty AGVs frequently operate in workshops where workers, forklifts and other equipment may enter the vehicle’s travel path.

Laser obstacle detection helps the AGV identify objects within predefined safety zones.

The system can usually be configured with different detection areas depending on vehicle speed and factory conditions.

When an obstacle enters the warning area, the AGV may reduce speed. If the obstacle enters the stop area, the vehicle can stop automatically.

This provides another layer of protection in addition to emergency stop buttons and other safety devices.

For heavy-load vehicles, stopping distance is especially important because higher payloads increase vehicle inertia.

The safety configuration should therefore be designed according to vehicle weight, maximum speed, braking performance and operating environment.

Laser obstacle avoidance does not replace proper traffic management, but it can significantly improve the safety design of an automated material handling system.
